Trying to teach the important sharing principle....I spent 10 minutes going back and forth with Hunter about a prized $1 magnifying glass toy. Addison wanted it, he didn't want to share it, and that was it as far as he was concerned. But our family motto is "If you can't share it, you can't have it." It prevents us from keeping the idea that we "earned" anything in life. God gave it to us, and we are to be the stewards, not the hoarders of it. So, my weak persuasion to my four year old went like this:
"Hunter, if you can't share it, you can't have it."
"But its my toy!"
"Addison just wants to play with it for a little bit, and then you can have it back."
"But I don't want to share!"
"Ok, then your choice is to let me take it away from you and you won't ever get to play with it any more, or you can share it with your sister."
(He slowly mumbles that he will share it.) She receives it with a joyful laugh and I point out to him,
"Look how happy she looks!"
"Yeah, well, I"M NOT HAPPY!"
She plays with it for a mere 5 seconds and he runs upstairs crying.
I call him downstairs and hug him and tell him how proud I am that he made the right choice.
"Hunter, sometimes God gives us blessings for making the right choice. Can I give you a special blessing? (thinking of rewarding him with a few gummies)
"No! I don't want a special blessing!"
.........OK, so to make the perfect analogy to our own spiritual lives....isn't it painfully clear that we do the same exact thing?
1. We don't want to share our things
2. We don't care what God tells us to do, it's too hard!
3. We are so small sighted that we can only focus on ourselves that we don't think about how it will bless others. (The magnifying glass makes our desires the only thing we focus on)
4. We become so out of practice with obeying God that we don't even care about the blessing that will come with obedience!
"Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God." Hebrews 13:16
